Manchester City tore through Chelsea’s defenses, inflicting a 3-0 defeat on the English Premier League champions with an all-round five star performance. Manchester City outplayed Chelsea in every department of the game, a fact which was thoroughly reflected in the final scoreline.
Sergio Aguero started up front instead of Wilfried Bony and it made a huge difference to City’s chances. The Argentine was denied thrice by Asmir Begovic within the first half an hour, but persisted with his attacks and eventually got the better of a struggling Chelsea backline. Aguero received the ball from David Silva with his back towards the goal, exchanged quick passes with Yaya Toure and skipped past Gary Cahill to bury his shot into the far corner, past the outstretched hands of Begovic.
Chelsea immediately attempted to get back into the game, but without much avail. It was a bit of an ironic situation for Jose Mourinho when both Gary Cahill and Diego Costa picked up injuries simultaneously. The Chelsea medical team was short-staffed and Manchester City doctors offered their services to help the London club out.
Chelsea started the second half brightly with their best chances of the game coming in the first fifteen minutes during the second period of forty-five minutes. Ramires had a goal incorrectly disallowed for offside, which could have been the equalizer for the Champions. The best chance of the match fell upon Eden Hazard after Diego Costa orchestrated a counter-attack, but the Belgian shot straight at Joe Hart, leaving Chelsea to rue their missed chances.
Just as it looked like Chelsea were increasing the pressure on the City goal, Vincent Kompany scored a thumping header of David Silva’s corner to double the lead. Fernandinho added a third goal for Manchester City with another exquisite piece of skill in the last ten minutes and put the game completely out of Chelsea’s reach.
On a whole, the entire Chelsea squad had an underwhelming day on pitch, with only Asmir Begovic, Cesar Azpilicueta and Nemanja Matic looking like they were up for a contest. Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard were shocking by their standards, and Diego Costa had a rare off-day, failing to influence the game at all. Kurt Zouma replaced John Terry at half-time and the manner in which the French youngster adapted would not bode well for the Chelsea captain. Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill had a poor night, quite similar to their uninspired displays against Swansea.
Manchester City came out all cylinders firing and Manuel Pellegrini will be extremely pleased to see his side live up to their billing of being the favourites among the title contenders.
