Manchester City got back to winning ways in the English Premier League as an inspired performance from Kevin de Bruyne helped Manuel Pellegrini’s side defeat Southampton 3-1. A thirteenth win in the last fifteen home games is a testament to Manchester City’s sheer quality at the Etihad in 2015.
While the Citizens fell to a pressing system deployed by Jurgen Klopp last weekend, they adopted a similar tactic to outwit Ronald Koeman’s side this Saturday. Raheem Sterling almost got on the scoresheet in the first minute. Kevin de Bruyne eventually put City ahead on the ninth minute. Fabian Delph, who was making his full debut for the Manchester-based club ever since joining this summer, doubled the lead eleven minutes later.
The former Aston Villa man had to overcome two hamstring injuries before he could start for Pellegrini, and put up a solid performance. Kevin de bruyne also set up Aleksandr Kolarov’s third goal which helped City clinch the tie after Shane Long had equalized right at the start of the second half.
Manchester City would be worried about Sergio Aguero’s injury though. Manuel Pellegrini looked frustrated after the game at the repeated injury concerns of his squad.
“He was not going to play more than 65 minutes. He had a pain in his heel but it was nothing important.”
– Manuel Pellegrini, Manchester City.
Manchester City’s neighbours, however, played out a 1-1 draw at Leicester City as Jamie Vardy scored in eleventh consecutive game to break Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record. It has been a dramatic rise for the young Englishman as he was playing non-league football until three years ago. Another goal at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday would mean he would equal the all-time top-flight record, which was set by Sheffield United’s Jimmy Dunne across the 1931‑32 season.
Vardy opened the scoring in the 24th minute when he got onto the end of a perfectly delivered ball from Christian Fuchs, shooting past a hapless David de Gea. Leicester, however, failed to capitalize on their lead.
I told the players to win and try and help Jamie break the record. I am really pleased he has done, we can all be very proud about it and I hope he carries on, but the real target this season is 40 points and now we have 11 to go. That is our project, and we are getting there.
– Claudio Ranieri, Leicester City.
Bastian Schweinsteiger scored the equalizer for Manchester United during the injury time at the end of the first half. Louis van Gaal’s side put up another disappointing showing – lack of creativity and absence of flair being their trademark of the game.
Everton drew at AFC Bournemouth, while Aston Villa fell to yet another defeat, this time against Watford. Crystal Palace scored five goals against Newcastle United while Stoke City dropped three points at Stadium of Light, to round up the other fixtures on Saturday.
