Tottenham Hotspur continued their unbeaten run in the English Premier League as they played out a goalless draw at White Hart Lane against Chelsea FC. This was Spurs’ thirteenth game in their unbeaten streak, but one which came close to get broken courtesy the Chelsea attackers.
The most surprising aspect regarding team news of either side was the exclusion of Diego Costa from the Chelsea starting line-up. This came after a public reproach of the Chelsea forward by Jose Mourinho during Chelsea’s midweek UEFA Champions League fixture against Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Tottenham Hotspur, who had lesser rest among both sides, surprisingly started on the front foot with the midfielders pressing efficiently and forcing Chelsea’s midfield duo of Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas to commit errors. After a comfortable first fifteen minutes, Chelsea began to create chances through the excellent work of Eden Hazard and Pedro.
“I am more than happy with the performance. I am happy with the team collectively. It was the best Chelsea performance of the season, against a dangerous team. My players did everything to try and interpret my defensive ideas the with ball.
We had control of the game and had the best chances. My team deserved more than a point.”
– Jose Mourinho, Chelsea
Chelsea looked way better than they have in recent weeks, but the lack of a quality centre forward in the side shone through. Eden Hazard put up one of his best showings of the current season, popping up in spaces everywhere across Chelsea’s front line. The Belgian almost scored the winner with a stunning volley but an exceptional save from Hugo Lloris denied Chelsea’s star player a deserved goal.
Tottenham Hotspur created their own chances with Son Heung-Min having the best opportunity of the match to score a goal, when he headed towards Asmir Begovic. The Chelsea goalkeeper had to remain alert on a couple of other occasions, but had a comfortable night overall as the Chelsea back four put up a solid showing.
Tottenham now travel to the Hawthorns to face West Bromwich Albion next week, while Chelsea play AFC Bournemouth at home.
“We put everything into it. We had a couple of chances but we worked hard for a clean sheet. We worked hard and we were solid. Compliments to the team – we gave everything. Our unbeaten run says everything about this team. We keep our feet on the ground & we’re going in the right direction.”
– Toby Alderweireld, Tottenham Hotspur.
