Manchester City have lodged a second bid for Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, according to reports in German media. The Bundesliga club reportedly rejected a bid worth £35m from Manchester City last week.
Kevin de Bruyne joined Wolfsburg from Chelsea for a sum of £18m, but the Belgian’s stars have risen since his arrival at the German club in January 2014. A complete misfit in Jose Mourinho’s side, de Bruyne set the Bundesliga on fire with his spirited attacking displays. A constant goal-scoring threat, Kevin de Bruyne was also dubbed an “assist machine” due to his penchant of setting up goals for his teammates.
Manchester City’s second bid is expected to be worth £47m, with an initial offer of £40m followed by £7m as add-ons based on appearance and performance of the Belgian. In a midfield which already comprises of Raheem Sterling and David Silva, de Bruyne could prove to be a huge asset for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The Chilean signed a one-year extension just the past week and has been tasked with rebuilding the Manchester City squad not only to bring back the Premier League title to the Etihad, but also to ensure European domination in the coming years.
Wolfsburg have vehemently refused to sell their star midfielder and are expected to reject the second bid as well. Klaus Allofs told German press a few days back how the German club is aiming to compete at the highest level and would ensure everything possible to keep hold of their best players.
“I think some other clubs have definitely turned Kevin’s head. Some huge figures are doing the rounds and I can understand why Kevin is leaving everything open. He’s got to listen to the offers. I can’t expect from him that he doesn’t even want to entertain them. If he was only contracted to us until 2017, then yes, it would be different. But let’s be honest about it – it’s highly unlikely that he’ll stay with us right up until 2019.”
– Klaus Allofs, Wolfsburg Sporting Director.
Manchester City have done some commendable business this summer, acquiring Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph to bolster their homegrown ranks. The contract extensions of Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Yaya Toure also make them prime competitors for the English Premier League. Should City manage to sign Kevin de Bruyne, Manuel Pellegrini will have one of the most balanced and nuanced attacking quadruplet at his disposal.
The current season will be one of the most closely contested English Premier League of recent years and the acquisition of de Bruyne is bound to tilt the balance strongly in Manchester City’s favour.
