Argentina legend Diego Maradona dies aged 60

Diego Maradona who guided Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986 has passed away at the age of 60 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his house.

Maradona was discharged from hospital two weeks ago, eight days after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot lodged between his brain and skull.

He had a nickname as the “Hand of God” after scoring a goal in World Cup quarter-finals against England by punching the ball into the net. The goal was allowed to stand because the referee did not see it and there was no VAR (Video assistance referee) in the olden days.

He went on to score one of the best goals in history after dribbling past several English defenders and netting the second goal.

Maradona has been admitted to hospital three times in the last 20 years for serious health issues due to his drug and alcohol abuse. 

Alongside Brazil’s Pelé, who turned 80 last month, Maradona is regarded by many fans as the greatest footballer of all time.

Pelé said Maradona had been a good friend and he believed they would “play together in the sky” one day.

Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez announced three days of national mourning for the passing of the football legend.
