UEFA impose two-year European ban on Fenerbahce

Fenerbahçe failed to win an appeal against the two-year ban from European club competitions.

The sanction was ordered by European football’s governing body UEFA in June for match-fixing violations.

Fenerbahçe‘s club officials were judged to have helped fix matches in order to win the 2011 Turkey Super Lig title.

Prior to the hearing, Fenerbahçe were able to take part in the qualifying rounds for this season’s Champions League, defeating Salzburg of Austria before losing to Arsenal last night.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) also dismissed a similar appeal for a one-year ban for match-fixing from Ukraine Premier League club Metalist Kharkiv, who also failed in an appeal to have the ban suspended. 

“The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has today dismissed the appeals filed by Fenerbahce SK and FC Metalist Kharkiv against the decisions taken by UEFA to exclude them from the European club competitions,” read a CAS statement.

The latest CAS decision upholding the bans will now be examined on Thursday by UEFA who will likely ban Fenerbahce from playing in the second tier Europa League this season.

Both Fenerbahce and Metalist will be banned from all European club competitons for next year.
