Should Manchester United pay €100 million for Antony Matheus?

Manchester United is desperate to sign Antony Matheus to solve their goal drought amidst uncertainty surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo.

Antony Matheus is a 22 year old Brazilian and he has been playing as a striker or attacking midfielder position for Ajax since Netherlands Eredivisie 2019-2020 season.

Ajax bought Antony Matheus from Sao Paulo in 2020 for only €15m transfer fee. So the transfer deal to Man United is deemed to be very profitable for the Amsterdam football club.

There has been rumours circulating that top football agent, Jorge Mendes, has been trying to solicit a deal to allow his VIP client Cristiano Ronaldo to play for a Champions League club this season.

As Manchester United finished in sixth position for last season English Premier League, they are ineligible to play in Europe’s most prestigious tournament, UEFA Champions League.

They could only settle for Europa League which Cristiano deemed it as not on par with his status.

Antony Matheus is likely to sign a five-year contract with the Red Devils. He will become United’s fifth summer signing following the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro.

Former Ajax and Netherlands player Marco van Basten disagreed that Antony is worthy of the hefty price tag. Although Antony is a technically gifted player, he has yet to score more than 10 goals in one season.

It is too early to tell that he can adapt to the Premier League football style of play.

SoccerPunter analyst felt that Antony is a playmaker and not a striker. At the end of the day, Man United still need to acquire a quality forward to deliver the goals. We hope that he does not turn out to be another flop like Paul Pogba.
