Inter Miami Sign Luis Suarez: Will Gerardo Martino’s Side Be Unstoppable Next Season?

When Lionel Messi joined MLS side Inter Miami, there were many who expected his arrival to coincide with the expansion team making a concerted immediate impact, but such was the poor early season form for David Beckham’s franchise that, frankly, such an ambition was doomed to fail.

However, in the coming campaign one can guarantee that head coach Gerardo Martino’s team will be among the front-runners, not least because the squad he has to work with has just got even better.

A quick glance at the MLS betting shows that Inter Miami are the big favourites to win the MLS Cup, with the likes of Los Angeles FC, the Columbus Crew, and FC Cincinnati following close behind. Fans of the DRV PNK Stadium side would do well to place a wager on the South Florida side running out victorious in 2024.

Last season, Martino had the likes of former FC Barcelona stars Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, along with Lionel Messi, and the capture of another former Camp Nou hero, Luis Suarez, will make Inter Miami a nightmare for opposition defences.

Though Suarez, at 37, is clearly no spring chicken, one imagines he will find life fairly easy in the United States, not least because he has achieved a great deal in recent seasons.

The former Liverpool man left FC Barcelona in 2020 and joined La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid and promptly helped Diego Simeone’s side to the domestic title, scoring 21 goals in the process.

Last season was spent at Brazilian outfit Gremio, where the deadly finisher racked up 29 goals in 54 games across all competitions and, therefore, comes to the MLS as very much a lethal finisher.

Over the course of his incredible career, Suarez has scored 489 career club goals, including 198 netted across his six seasons with Catalan giants FC Barcelona. Clearly, he knows Alba, Busquets, and Messi well, and this, too, will play in Martino’s favour and let’s not forget that the Argentine boss has previously managed them all together in Spain.

On the capture, co-owner David Beckham commented,

“We are delighted to have a player of Luis’ quality and passion for the game join our club,”

“He joins a squad that is inspiring the next generation and we look forward to seeing him take to the field with both former team-mates and young players from our academy.” Beckham added.

On his move to the MLS, Suarez stated,

“I’m very happy and excited to take on this new challenge with Inter Miami. I can’t wait to get started, and I’m ready to work to make the dream of winning more titles with this great club a reality,”

“I’m optimistic about what we can achieve together with our shared ambition. I’ll give my all to bring joy to these great fans I’ve heard so much about while I wear Inter Miami colours, and look forward to reuniting with great friends and players. I’m also eager to meet my new team-mates and coaches.” Suarez added.

Having scored goals in whichever league he has played in, one imagines Suarez will find his feet very quickly in the United States, and this is another reason why Inter Miami may well be next to unstoppable in 2024.
