Who are some of England’s Most Successful Football Clubs?

The 2023/24 Premier League’s recent kick off has gripped a lot of football fans. While it is still too early to tell how the story will go, many pundits are already assuming that Manchester City will be taking their fourth title in a row. If they can achieve this task, they will go down in history as the first football club in England to have done so. Certainly, they will be remembered as one of the greatest and most successful English clubs of all time.

City’s prospective success has gotten us to think about some of the most successful football clubs in the country. In this article, we are going to go over a few of the Premier League’s most successful clubs, who have historically stood atop the English football world. But first, we have to define what it means to be “successful.”

The Stipulations for Success

What does it mean to be a successful club? Well, there are several factors that go into being considered a “success.” First thing to note is that, a popularity on betting sites is a pretty notable measure of success. Manchester United has 13 titles overall, which is more EPL titles than any other club that currently competes in the league.

However, it doesn’t stop with that. United has won a record of 20 overall top-flight football titles, and an incredible 21 Football Association Community Shields. Certainly, they are England’s most successful club domestically. However, they are also no slouches internationally. The Red Devils have won the European Cup three times, and also hold a, Intercontinental Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup trophy.

Sadly, the Red Devils are not doing all too well in the 2023/24 Premier League. They are currently languishing in the bottom ten, at a 13^th ranking. They’ve won three games, and lost three as well. As of the writing of this article, their last match was a victory against Burnley, so perhaps we will see the Reds switch gears and rise in the ranks.

Liverpool

Liverpool has a long and storied history in English football. Next o Manchester United, they have won the most amount of league titles and FA Community Shields. The club has also won eight FA Cups and nine League Cups, a record in English football. As far as current standings are concerned, Liverpool may even be more successful and maybe even more popular than the Red Devils. However, historically, United are a bit more accomplished.

In the 2023/24 Premier League, Liverpool are ranked second, with only one club above them in the rankings. Out of the six matches that they’ve played, they’ve won five, lost none, and tied in one. In their next match, they are facing off against Tottenham Hotspur, who are quite successful in their own right. Though many are backing Liverpool, there are quite a few pundits who believe the match could go either way. It is definitely gearing up to be an intriguing game.

Manchester City

United’s long-time rival, and the second most popular club from Manchester, the Sky Blues have definitely earned a spot on this list. Manchester City has been having an incredible half-decade. They’ve won three consecutive Premier League titles, and four overall titles in the past five years. Overall, they’ve won nine league titles, seven Football Association Cups, and eight League Cups. Their international success is also something to be admired as well.

Manchester City’s incredible success last year has propelled them to new heights, popularity-wise. For most of the Premier League, they were in the 2^nd spot, trying to catch up to the Gunnars. However, in the 11^th hour, City managed to rack up a lot more points, and with Arsenal making a couple of blunders, the Sky Blues overcame the London-based club, and managed to win their third Premier League in a row. If they can replicate their victory during this season, they will become the first English club to win the Premier League four times in a row.

Honorable Mentions

The three clubs that we’ve discussed in this article are undoubtedly great. Their success and popularity, both domestically and internationally is well-earned, and well-deserved. However, they are not the only English clubs that deserve respect. Let us briefly list off a few of honorable mentions that deserve consideration.

·        Chelsea

Chelsea has not had a great past couple of years. However, by no means does that negate their past successes and achievements. The Blues are England’s fourth most-successful club in terms of trophies.

·        Arsenal

The Gunnars are definitely a club worth discussing. They’ve won 14 FA Cups, a record for English football, and have managed to rack up an unbeaten title. Known for their incredible performances, Arsenal are certainly among the best and most successful English clubs.

·        Tottenham Hotspur Hotspur has not had much success recently. However, much like Chelsea, that does not negate their former glory. Unlike Chelsea, however, Hotspur have managed to consistently remain in the top 5, or top 10 in the EPL.
