Real Madrid became the first team in the modern era to successfully defend the Champions League last season, hammering the previously airtight Juventus 4-1 in the final to follow on from their success over Atletico Madrid a year before.

Their involvement in the transfer market this summer has been surprisingly low key however, apart from the growing speculation surrounding Monaco wonderkid Kylian Mbappe. They have only made two signings of note; bringing in left back Theo Hernandez and midfielder Dani Ceballos for a comparatively small figure of under £50 million.

Of course, they still have the likes of Isco, Sergio Ramos, and Cristiano Ronaldo to call upon, so they’re not exactly a weak squad, but you would expect them to bring in some more new faces before the end of the transfer market.

As far as Real Madrid’s pre-season has gone it’s been fairly poor. They won on penalties to MLS All Stars in their final friendly game, a result which makes it two draws and two defeats in normal time in their four friendly matches.

One of these draws was against Manchester United, who subsequently beat them on penalties. Jose Mourinho’s side have enjoyed a pretty successful summer campaign, beating LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, Manchester City, Valarenga, and Sampdoria with relative ease. Their only blip was the 1-0 defeat to Barcelona, but that’s not something to worry about really.

Apart from their on field results they’ve also brought in some potentially game changing new faces. Romelu Lukaku is the big name up front, but both Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic could be just as important in the season to come.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan continues to impress as well. The Armenia captain scored six goals in his 11 European appearances last season and is always a threat. With Juan Mata only just returning from injury Mkhitaryan is expected to play, so backing him to score anytime at 11/4 looks a great bet.

We’re not expecting Manchester United to keep a clean sheet though. It’s been almost 16 months since Real Madrid failed to score in any competitive or friendly match, and considering each of the six meetings between these sides has seen both teams find the back of the net odds of 4/6 for Both Teams to Score look fantastic value for money.

Manchester United look heavily overpriced for this game considering Real Madrid’s dodgy pre-season. Cristiano Ronaldo has missed the entirety of the summer friendlies and Gareth Bale is rumoured to be injured again. This makes a Manchester United Win or Draw Double Chance at 10/11 look attractive, so we’re backing that and a 2-1 win for the Europa League winners at 12/1.

In-play prediction Man U to win the rest of first half, meaning you can as well put Man U to score next goal. The defense is solid for Man U
