The Stade Velodrome has turned into a bit of a
cauldron for Marseille recently with fans
protesting with banners and chants to show their
frustration at the sorry state the team has been
in this season. They sit 7th in Ligue 1 and have
dropped off majorly from the quality of
performances they were putting in last season.
This time last year they were sitting in 3rd place
before going second just a few weeks later but
this campaign has been far from those lofty
heights as they have struggled to compete with
mid-table sides. There has been a great labour
about their play with Florian Thauvin and Dimitri
Payet essentially expected to carry them over
the line in every match. They have been beaten
by teams like Nantes and Montpellier in the
league with fourth division side Andrezieux’s 2-0
victory in the cup a major low point for manager
Rudi Garcia in his Marseille career.
They were winless since November before they
finally got a scrappy win as they bested ten-men
Caen away from home last weekend (1-0). Caen
played 40 minutes a man down but still managed
to get four shots on target compared to
Marseille solitary strike. This really shows that
while the Olympians got the three points, they
were still in the thick of it and nothing less than
a fantastic performance will get them anything
against Lille.
Lille have been incredible this season as they sit
2nd in the league and are on a four match
winning streak after their cup win in midweek.
The atmosphere at the club is sky high and
Christophe Galtier’s men look on track to finish
2nd this season, despite the challenge of Lyon
and Étienne below them. They have scored the
fourth most goals in the league and just never
look like losing, even when they go 1-0 down, as
they did against Reims, Rennes and Amiens last
weekend. The front four of Pépé, Ikone, Leao and
Bamba have been excellent and even though
they didn’t play at their best last week against
Amiens, their performances generally have been
so high that we’re backing them to bounce back
to their best in this massive match in Marseille.
Lille have kept just one clean sheet in their last
eight league games but their attack has scored
13 times in that period which usually helps dig
them out of trouble. Lille have also been great
away from home recently with them winning
each of their last four games on the road,
scoring seven and conceding just two. Marseille
are completely different with no wins at home
since November and we feel this will be a major
factor here. Lille won 3-0 when these teams last
met in September and we’re backing the visitors
to win again but by a much tighter margin as
Marseille will have some wind in their sails
following last week’s victory. Marseille have
scored in seven of their last eight matches and
with Lille without a league clean sheet since the
start of December, we’re backing both team play under 2.5
