Defending champions Real Madrid host Paris SG in the first leg of a mouth-watering Champions League (CL) last-16 tie that promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats with plenty of thrills, spills, high drama and controversy. Will it live up to the hype?
Zinedine Zidane?s side come into the game on the back of a resounding and morale-boosting 5-2 win over Real Sociedad in La Liga. Los Blancos were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Leganes last month and find themselves a massive 17 points adrift of runaway leaders Barca in La Liga, so the CL represents the only realistic hope of adding major silverware to their trophy cabinet this season.
PSG are on track to win their seventh Ligue 1 title as they currently hold a commanding 12-point lead over Monaco at the top of the table with just 13 games left, but winning the CL is the primary goal for one of the most expensive squads in football history. Unai Emery?s men ended the group stages as winners with 15 points from six games.
The previous six meetings between these these two giants have seen two wins apiece and two draws. They have faced each other twice in the CL (group stages, 2015/16), with the clash at the Parc des Princes ending in a goalless draw at the Parc des Princes and Madrid winning 1-0 at the Bernabeu.
Key battles: This heavyweight clash will see a battle between two of the world?s most lethal attacking tridents in Madrid?s BBC (Bale, Benzema, Cristiano) and Paris? MCN (Mbappe, Cavani, Neymar). The Parisian trio have notched 74 goals in all competitions so far this season, 36 more than their Madrid counterpart (38).
Stat attack: It?s still February and Madrid have already shipped more goals at the Bernabeu (22 in 21 games) than they did in the whole of last season (21 in 28 games).
PSG have hit the back of the net in each of their last 29 games in all competitions ? averaging a staggering 3.4 goals per game.
